Stress and anxiety are familiar experiences for most people. The tension before a difficult conversation, the worry that keeps you awake the night before something important, the sense that you are carrying too much. Some of this is a natural part of life. But when stress and anxiety become persistent, or begin to shape the way you live, it is worth taking them seriously.
Stress and anxiety: what is the difference?
Stress is usually tied to a specific situation: a deadline, a difficult relationship, financial pressure, too many demands and not enough time. It tends to ease when the situation changes. Anxiety often feels more diffuse: a persistent sense of worry or dread that does not always have a clear cause, and that can continue even when things improve on the outside.
For some people, anxiety centres on particular fears or situations. For others, it is a more general orientation towards the world: an underlying sense that something bad is about to happen, or that they cannot cope. Both are real, and both respond well to support.
Signs that stress or anxiety may benefit from professional support
- Difficulty sleeping, or waking in the early hours with a busy mind
- Physical symptoms: headaches, muscle tension, a tight chest, an unsettled stomach
- Feeling irritable, on edge, or unable to relax
- Avoiding situations or responsibilities you previously managed without difficulty
- Exhaustion that does not lift with rest
- Worry that feels out of proportion or impossible to switch off
- Panic attacks or sudden, intense feelings of fear
- A sense that anxiety is affecting your relationships, your work, or your enjoyment of life
How therapy can help
Therapy offers a space to understand what is driving your stress or anxiety, to explore the patterns that keep it going, and to develop different ways of responding to it. For some people, this involves looking at the thoughts and beliefs that are feeding their worry. For others, it is about understanding where an anxious tendency comes from, or learning to tolerate uncertainty without being overwhelmed by it.
At Inner Space, our therapists work with stress and anxiety at every level: from the everyday pressures of modern life to more complex or long-standing patterns. The work is always tailored to the individual, and there is no expectation that you arrive with a clear picture of what you need.
