Being a young adult is a time of significant transition. The years between roughly 18 and the early 30s can bring huge opportunity and, alongside it, a great deal of uncertainty. Identity, relationships, career, finances, independence, and belonging are all in flux at once. It is a period that is often described as exciting from the outside, and frequently exhausting and disorienting from within.
Young adults often feel that they should be coping better than they are. The pressure to have things figured out, to be building towards something, or to match the lives they see portrayed by peers can be significant. Therapy offers space to be honest about how things actually are, without judgment.
What young adults often bring to therapy
- Anxiety about the future: career, relationships, purpose
- Navigating new independence, or the difficulty of leaving home
- Identity questions: who am I, and what do I want?
- Relationship difficulties, including first serious relationships or heartbreak
- The lingering effects of difficult experiences in adolescence
- Low mood or a sense of being stuck
- Feeling different from peers and not knowing why
- Transition from student life to the working world
How therapy can help
At Inner Space, we understand the particular pressures of this life stage and we take them seriously. We work with young adults both in person (in Tunbridge Wells, Mayfield, and Crowborough) and online, which suits those who are studying or living away from home.
Our work connects with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, relationships, and online therapy.
Young Minds (youngminds.org.uk) offers mental health information and resources specifically for young people.
